In Her Silent Pain

In Her Silent Pain
Everything is quiet
Clock hands march towards midnight
Soon this place will come alive
Its time to kill a man tonight
News crews gather
In the early evening light
Every so called expert analyzes
About what gives who the right
The congregation forms
As the neo cons scream
Neither listens to the other
No one caring what tonight means
In muted light
The man sits all alone
Wondering if those words are true?
Tonight will I be going home?
Here they come
Time to take him away
The last walk he’ll ever make
There will be no last minute stay
The room stares
At what they call humane
Its standing room only
One empty seat remains
Here’s the star
Let the show begin
The press wants his last words
Will he confess his sin?
He looks around
Relieved that she is not there
In his heart he feels her
No comfort that she cares
Now it comes
Poison courses through his veins
Another victim’s family stares at him
Only his lifeless body remains
The press lurks
Hovering outside her door
They crave his daughter’s reaction
Tears, and hopefully much more
Answer our questions
We want details of what he did
This will help you heal
Now that your fathers dead
Meanwhile across town
A celebrations starting now
Another woman hugs her children
A code of silence her vow
Rearrange your facts
That’s all it will take
He was always a monster
Did he give his daughter a break?
Live with herself
It won’t be hard to do
He could never prove his lies
No one new the other two
Judge and Jury
Agreed that she was right
And with the media coverage
Apparently justice was served tonight
Let yourself imagine
The isolation she must feel
Her innocence still pours
From wounds that refuse to heal
Only she knows
What happened that chilly day
As her father raped her
He stole her soul away

Author's Notes: This was a painful piece for me to write because much of this is true. I felt all the pain you could imagine when the facts that became this poem were told to me. Never have I felt so unable to reach out to someone and to this day the person who inspired this poem continues to hurt herself because of this incident which happened more than thirty years ago.
