Sunset Beach

by Azurite Phox

Age Group: Adult

Beyond the sand and shells and reef
They play and swim beneath the sea
Though, not hard to see on a clear day
From afar, you need binoculars anyway

Past the pipeline and the coconut trees
Near the shore or out at sea
Their fins so mighty, waving friendly flips
Blowing water and doing tricks

And even on days when waves are high
They make the most expert surfers look shy
Turning the crowds along the beach
But it's ok 'cause even surfers watch while they skim the reef

These great mammals float upside down
If you're watching, they'll spin around
They'll sing a song as they flap their rear
You can't help but grin from ear to ear

The whales will perform...
Sometimes all day
Even after the sun sets
You can still hear them play

Author's Notes: Wrote this on May 1, 2014

My mom called one day and asked me to write a poem for my baby sister to recite in her school talent show. I asked why she couldn't write her own poem and my mom insisted her "talent" would be only being 8 years old reciting a poem before a room full of people. "Can you imagine how scary that is for most kids her age?" I rolled my eyes when I got off the phone with her, but agreed to do it anyway just because I didn't want to let my baby sister down. Choosing the theme was hard because this poem is not like any other poem I've ever wrote. I didn't want to write something dark or deep. I wanted to give the poem more of an innocent story for young kids to enjoy from a young kid's perspective.

I live in North Shore so choosing the title was easy. A lot of what I took from this poem were things I witnessed almost every time I visited the Sunset Beach area. After all, Sunset Beach was my main focus for writing the poem when I decided to write about the magic people experience in Hawaii. My sister has never had the chance to visit me since I moved to here, but I wanted to spark her imagination by providing images of a magical world that she will want to venture to one day.
