Winter's Banishment

We honor you, o Grey Lord of the hoary ranges,
Who through the times of snowy storms and sable tides
Our lives, our paths and every step thereon did safely guide
But now your time has come and gone – behold the
season's changes!
We honor you, o Ancient Crone and weaver of sad dirges,
Who with your haunting rhymes did sting us to our souls,
And through our trials and griefs did teach us to be whole,
But now the solemn tides must yield to joyous urges!
Begone, therefore, our wintry Lady and our sternest Lord!
For three whole seasons do we banish you to pleasant
exile
That you receive replenishment and succor for a while.
And then may you again command the icy horde.
Author's Notes: This poem was one of two prayers read during Siouxland First Wiccan Congregation's 2005 Ostara celebration.
