'Tis Hallowe'en

by Lady Isadora
 Age Group: Adult

© 1981, 2005
’Tis Hallowe’en of all the year Dark Hecate doth hold most dear Wherefore we Witches gather here To celebrate old Hallows
Mistress of Death and Sorcery Attend our Sabbat revelry! Dread Lord of Shadows, with us be To celebrate old Hallows!
In the waning moonlight In the dead of night As white as bone Is the reaping Crone
The Witches’ New Year doth begin Proclaimed by voices on the wind Attendant spirits, welcome in To celebrate old Hallows!
As Witches met in ages past At Summer’s End their spells to cast So are we met this night at last To celebrate old Hallows!
In the waning moonlight In the dead of night As cold as stone Is the reaping Crone
’Tis Hallowe’en of all the year Your Isadora* holds most dear Come, Witches All, and join me here We’ll raise the dead at Hallows!
Author's Notes: *Substitute your own Craft name in the second line of the last verse.
These are actually song lyrics from my first album, *The Witching Hour*, but because the piece has many vocal and instrumental overdubs, and is impossible to recreate singlehandedly in person, I often simply recite the words dramatically as mood-setting poetry towards the beginning of a Samhain ritual.
FYI: I still use the beloved childhood name "Hallowe'en", short for "Hallows Evening" and one of the most magical words in the English language, for this Sabbat as well as "Samhain". "Hallow" is an Old English word for "holy" or "sacred", and is not inherently Christian. A great deal of Witchy custom is Old English (Anglo-Saxon) , not just Celtic, so I like to honor both.
