Sonnet to the Old Ones

There was an age when the Gods of the old
Faiths walked more freely in the world of men,
An age of miracles we shall not see again,
Of which we merely know through stories told.
Returned these Gods to fair Olympus, or Valhall,
To Tyr-Na-Nog, or to some other lands,
Or are they buried with old kings in desert sands?
They seem but vanished this this day, one and all.
Did they before the missionaries' jealous zeal
Disperse like soldiers at the horsemen's charge
Or did the skeptics Donar's thunder steal,
Did Doubting Thomas sink Tahuti's barge?
Yet if Gods do not die, they may return again
And teach their mysteries to those who yearn for them.
Author's Notes: This sonnet was written as the prologue to a one-act play, Baldur's Death.
