Crown of Thorns

Crown of thorns, That's what flower you are, Something so prickly, secret and sharp, But also so fragile. Thorns entwining, cleaving together, This is your spirit, the barrier you put around you. You've been hurt so many, many times, Your delicate, vibrant blooms trampled so often, That you shield yourself with your thorns, Ready to prick and draw blood if need be, If only to protect yourself from others. Crown of thorns, This you wore all your physical life, Born a martyr to love, Tight around your heart, So giving and so loving. But alas, you loved too much, gave too much of yourself, Those thorns that drew your precious blood all that time, finally dug and tore too deeply, And there was nothing else they could rend. Your most warm and offering heart at last gave out, The Queen of Hearts, killed by her own Crown.
Author's Notes: This one is also about my mama whom I lost last year, quite suddenly.
