Isn't Motherhood Grand?

Isn't Motherhood Grand?
Abandoning your children
If you work outside the home .
Haven't you watched TV
Babysitters and Nannies are evil
Hidden cameras say it's so.
Isn't Motherhood Grand?
So you stay at home to keep them safe
You're not providing them with things
So many feel they need.
Even though they have
Food, shelter
Clothing, a bed
More toys then you ever had
Isn't Motherhood Grand?
If you take even a little bit of time for yourself
You start to tell yourself
"I'm being selfish"
"A good mother isn't selfish"
Even when you really need a break.
And are reminding yourself
"I really love my kids"
Isn't Motherhood Grand?
A Good Mother's kids are always neat and clean
Haven't you seen Donna Reed?
That's a good mother.
"Not like you"
Whisper hidden doubts
Every time you take a minute
One lousy minute
Just for yourself
Isn't Motherhood Grand?
When your three-year-old starts yelling
"Stranger"
At you
on a street corner
Because you won't buy her a scrunchie for her hair
Isn't Motherhood Grand?
You have to remind yourself when it sucks
The Dark Mother hovers, looming near
Then you hear
Of deaths times five
A mother snapped
None left alive
And you pull your children close
and cry
