For what it's worth

For what it’s worth, I know you’re angry with me,
And I can’t say I blame you.
For what it’s worth, I always looked up to you,
I always thought we could get through anything.
For what it’s worth, you know I’m sorry,
Things didn’t turn out like I planned.
I know you think I’m a coward,
Sometimes I simply run away.
For what it’s worth to you, I love you,
In my self-destructive way.
For what it’s worth, I know this isn’t the best time,
But some things simply cannot wait.
For what it’s worth, I know you think I’m selfish,
What you don’t see is how much I hate.
I hate that you think you saved me,
When your abuse was simply a more subtle poison.
I hate that you manipulate me, treat me like the child I was, and “put me in my place”
I hate that you make me feel worthless, and unloved.
For what it’s worth to you, I hate myself,
And circumstances that shaped me into this.
So, for what it’s worth I will tell you what you want to hear,
“You win”
But…
This time I need to look ahead,
As well as look behind.
Today I need to make decisions,
Based on more than overused obligations.
I am learning, becoming that which you cannot understand.
I say this with certainty because I took a different path.
A path that leads somewhere new,
Perhaps even away from you.
I am as the tides, growing and changing before your eyes.
Yet, you cannot or will not see that.
