The Question

The Question:
Just to be understood
Why must there be hate and fear
when all that is needed is "Why"?
You claim to see me
Claim that I am
Lost
Misguided
False
Misled
Wrong
You who are treading a different path
to the same goal.
My path is not dark,
but lit by millions of burning torches,
One for each life taken by those who said,
"You dwell in darkness!"
Was enough light given?
Or do you see darkness
only because...
Your eyes are closed?
Author's Notes: I wrote this on Samhain 2002. The title "The Question" came to me after reading once more about the Inquisition and the euphemistic name of 'The Question' given to the process of torture. This is not a claim towards how many the Church killed during the infamous Burning Times, nor to say how many of them were actually practicing the Old Religion or merely were the victims of their neighbors' rage and jealousy. Truth be told... that doesn't really matter. Whether or not it was ten million lives taken in the name of bigotry, religious intolerance, greed, misunderstanding, or fear, it's too many if it is just one.
