Lammas

by Aphina Moonwalker
 Age Group: Adult

"Lammas"
Sunrise in the early morn, Goddess walking in the corn. Crops are flourishing everywhere, The reddened apple, the golden pear. First Harvest is here, the time has come, To leave behind those things undone; Yet tend those things almost fulfilled, To harvest before the winter's chill. In the fields, the grain grows tall, As summer days lead on to fall. Fall to winter, and winter to spring, The Circle turns, new life it brings. Air & Fire & Water & Earth, The Elements help fuel rebirth. In my circle by candlelight, I honor the Lord and Lady's plight. Blessings plaited into braids, With the Lord and Lady's aid. Protect my home and all within, Bless my family and all my friends. Upon Life's Journey I embark, Youth to death, and light to dark. The circle turns for all to see, As I will, so mote it be.

Author's Notes: I originally wrote this as part of a Lammas Ritual. While reciting the poem, I plait together three small bundles of long wheat stalks. If you soak the stalks in warm water for several hours (I use my bathtub) before ritual, they will become pliant and easy to braid. Keep the water warm while soaking. Keep chanting poem/spell until wheat stalks are completely plaited. Secure end with ribbon. Hang over hearth or front door to bless and protect your home and all who enter.
