Faithless

by Joseph
 Age Group: Adult

Harlot, dull and fading pale, Do you not hear your children? In the night their tortured wail Echoes in my mind again. Though they tear their way through me, They move you only slightly. And should it cause you to be Uncomfortable, then leave. For only will I pay you If you will stop their screams. Or should I merely kill you To take them from my dreams?
Author's Notes: The meter and rhyme scheme may look very familiar to those who've studied poetry. As for those individuals, I apologize for stealing it. If it makes any difference, it was for graduation work.
Anyway - social commentary, allusions to sex, violence, abuse, neglect, drugs and prostitution, blah blah blah. Don't read into it too much. It is what it is. A guy does a whore, her kids are crying, he's flipping out and may or may not go insane and kill them all. Mostly, I wanted to say something about the depravity of the human experience. The main comment I tried to emphasize was the circumstance of a man who, having already demoralized himself and the woman, has the audacity to complain about the hunger and desperation of children. This may or may not be contradictory to the concept of the social construct, wherein the Man is inadvertantly a supplying source for the young of his own species, though not necessarily his own (twisted though circumstances may be) .
I'm sure there's something about social Darwinism in there, too, but I didn't follow that path with my work, so I never really explored it much. Any comments?
