I Am Finally Free

I am finally free
I am finally free from expectations set too high
From arguments that were picked out of thin air
From that constant feeling of not being good enough
I was never good enough for you was I?
Everything I did
Could have been done better
Every time I tried
You thought I should’ve quit while I was ahead
And when I tried to move past the failures
You made sure that they were just above my head
Ready to crash down and bury me with their weight
Your accusations, your sly comments
They left a bigger mark then you will ever know
In order to compensate for what I could never be to you
I took a razor to my skin and bled
With a twisted sense of logic that consisted of me believing that it would be a suitable punishment
I made scars that went beyond physical
I walked around feeling that I was a burden to this world
All because of you
You took a smiling girl
And turned her into a tear streaked teen
Every tear that rolled down my face
To match the crimson ones that rolled down my arms
One day though I opened my eyes
And I saw you for what you really are
My eyes took in the needles, the scratching, the thieving and let’s not forget the feening when you couldn’t get your fix
I put down the razor
And decided enough was enough
I don’t deserve to feel like a burden
I don’t deserve to feel as if I’m not good enough
And you sure as hell don’t have the right to make me feel that way
I have more to show in my fifteen years of life
Then you do in the forty five of yours
My tears are no longer that crimson stain running down my arms
You will not get any more of my blood!
I am finally free from the bitterness you instilled in me
From the hatred of myself that you cultivated
From the razor that had me enslaved to the thoughts “just one more cut”
I freed myself from that one demon always whispering in my ear
You were that demon Paula
Now, you’re insignificant
You’re nothing more than those arguments pulled out of thin air
And just like those arguments
You were forgotten in the morning
