In the Wake of the Maenads

 Age Group: Adult

He lay strewn, Rent, Pieces scattered along The Arcadian hillside, Some of him over *here*, Some of him over *there*-- (Rather like a Scarecrow, taken apart by monkeys) -- Blood bubbling from his lips, The light in his eyes gone. God's son, nightinggale's voice, Bereft. Wandering, will-less, Wife lost twice to darkness. He walked with grief Not even the music could allay. He was warned-- They come! Apollo's child would neither Run nor hide, Nor turn aside his way. They came! Bacchante, wine-wild, God-maddened, Joyous. And so he lies, Torn apart, Lyre smashed, fingers broken-- Song stilled. Solace at last, reunited (On Death's dark, Stygian shore) , His shade searches, seeking That tap on the shoulder, And he turns with a soft smile: "Eurydice..."
