The Death of Actaeon

by BrigidsBlest

Age Group: Adult

He runs,
The hounds at his heels,
Head heavy with horn,
Heart heaving.

Silver light filters down through green,
Lunar radiance bleeding through
Branches of birch and beech;
He can hear their belling and baying,
See the flashing fangs.

Close, so close, too close—

Panting, he stumbles,
Panting, he falls.

In a flash, they have found him.
Teeth tearing, snarling and snapping.
Scarlet, splattered—
Meat, muscle, blood spilling over the softly-crumbling moss.

He can see her with his dying eyes,
One hand that is a hoof raised
In agony, entreating—
Her eyes hard and cold as she turns away—
Hard, cold, and as bright as her light.

O Artemis!
Cruel, proud, merciless!
What man ever suffered such transfiguration?
What child born ever grew to such rebirth?

Yet he can still recall the trembling moment that he saw her at the spring—
Nude, gleaming, clad in moonlight and dew,
Kneeling to wash in those chill waters,
Eyes flashing in fury
As his favorite hound betrayed him with a hunter’s growl.

The deer’s last moan fades—
*So beautiful.*
That stolen glance, her naked form—
Death was worth it.

Author's Notes: I expect to get flamed for this poem; the depiction of Artemis given here--cruel, proud, and merciless--is one that won't find a lot of favor amongst some pagans. However, keep in mind the poem was written from the POV of a dying man--and that a goddess known both for her skill at hunting and for her virginity would certainly be angered and outraged to find a man watching her bathe (duh!) .

And, as the last line was worth it.
