The Elk and the Wolf

The Elk and the Wolf
I was there in the snow covered wood
A mighty elk in the forest I stood
I was the wolf with a scent on the air
I was there, I was there
I was the snow that bent low the trees
The misting of air that out both breathed
I was the cold, falling down through the air
I was there, I was there
I was the fear in the mighty elk bellow
The foot falls of wolf paws on sun reddened snow
I was the blood spilled, the killing tear
I was there, I was there
I was the life and majesty both
Proud were my antlers, and gray my coat
My hooves ran quickly away from my paws
But I could not escape that jagged maw
I hungered, such fear, I ran and I chased
I was the wolf and the elk, I was fate
The life in death, the struggle that binds
And still I live and still I die
I was there, and so were you
That snow covered morn upon which the wind blew

Author's Notes: I couldn't sleep last night, I was on that delicate cusp of exhuasted dream and insomnia... I kept seeing an elk in a snow covered wood tracked by a hungry wolf. Suddenly it was as if I was there, as if I were both of them locked in the struggle of life and death, I was the cold air and the snow, I was the silent trees that watched it unfold. It was beautiful really. I had to write it down.
