Circus (A poem of Strength)

by MorkAlg
 Age Group: Adult

Circus
A ragged tent so filled with gloom Like light forgot about this room A curious crowd of popcorn and balloons Nose up at the smell of stifled doom They nudge and press for a better look To see what bubbles from misfortunes brook In a cage of iron and filthy straw On roughshod wheels that barely crawl A beast is chained in a sea of eyes That feel no pity for his mournful cries Like jackals they slaver and await the kill As the ringmaster prances and the air grows still ...
Gather round What sights to see Look in the cage Meet misery
Poke the stick How the proud do fall Prod ever deeper The thorn poked paw
Glorious once This caged up creature Strong and wild With regal feature
But look at him now Aginst chains straining Weak and tired His will is failing
Gather closer Before he's gone The last of his breed And darkness calls
Shall we all jest now At his saddened fate At the rusty cage Of this forlorn ape
Yes, what can he do In a shackle and bent Behind iron bars His will is spent
To fate resigned He's railed his last And lowly lays Like broken glass ...
Then the beast breathed deep in the iron cage He wailed and beat his chest in rage The chains once stiff, like butter bent The shaking cage so quickly rent It fell with a creak that filled with horror The gasping throng who'd fed this furor He stood tall among the frightened crowd His scream of rage like a beastly bow One step he took on the dirty ground And felt at last that freedom found With a shirk, the last of the chains fell free Through the tent flap, wind and light and trees

Author's Notes: I was feeling really trapped today here in the office. Spring is off to a cold and gloomy start and I just feel blech... so what better way to express that than through poetry?
