The "C" Word

Age Group: Adult
Cancer is a frightful word,
brings panic, fear, and dread,
but taking matters in one’s own hands
can change fear to hope instead.
Prayers are thoughtful words of hope,
and let us know others care.
While that alone is helpful,
your strength brings fruit to bear.
The spark within your natural self
now damaged needs a fix.
Your immune system and empowerment
are just two of the tricks.
If the man upstairs decides our fate
then an effort we need not make.
A seat belt and chemotherapy
would be futile for heaven’s sake.
The one who helps you help yourself
and believes in you alright,
puts the power into your hands
and helps you win the fight.
While unconventional and left of center
not always in the rhyme,
their time, concern, and caring
will all pass the test of time.
The time invested in the fight
to chop and dice the greens,
is something so much deeper
in what all of this means.
Always present, all in motion,
and never sitting still.
Love is pouring from the heart
and is the magic pill.
The doctor says the chemo,
the church says it’s the prayer,
but it’s your power from within
and the one who made you dare!
Author's Notes: My mother is a 5-plus year breast cancer survivor. We just found out that she now has metastases to the liver.
