The Sack

The Sack
Long behind me it winds
Deep the ruts and dusty foot falls
Night birds wake, rustle in damp light
I have long to go as night crawls
Burdens I carry on weary shoulders
Past transgressions full in a rucksack
Terrible it is that I have brought it
Into a field of flowers that never looked back
All darkenss seems to simmer
As I crest a hump in the dirty road
The air, silent grown and stilfed
And heavier feels this ancient load
When clarity like a sun-ray breaks
Through mottled foliage it shines
I shrug, I shift, I drop it down
Packed horrors left behind
The road is kinder in the gloam
Steps easy, light and free
The forest yawns and and seems to smile
At the passing by of me
