Harbor

by Morgan3

Age Group: Adult

making noise
left hand
makes shadows
upper hallway
eyes clash
helpmate dreams
rich black
knocks softly
markings
orange smoke
overdose
framed memories
bold doorknobs
little known rule
obligatory smile
wreath of flowers
old eaves
needful program
swaying sunlight

Author's Notes: I was doing some experimenting in letting my inhibitions go lately. I often hold myself to using classical forms and the occasional free verse or prose piece. I love forms and am a bit obsessive with counting syllables and keeping tight rhythms and rhyme schemes.

I have lately begun to study some of the surrealist poets. Including modern surrealist Philip Lamantia, and the French surrealist translations of Pablo Picasso and Pierre Unik. Reading some of their work has inspired me to allow myself to let go of my forms a bit and try a bit of surrealism instead.

I had read that one method of writing surrealist poetry is to brain storm or do automatic writing…where in the author will just begin to write whatever random thoughts or words that come into their head. There were many others too, including a parlor game called exquisite corpse.

"Exquisite corpse or Cadavre exquis is a method by which a collection of words or images are collectively assembled. It is based on an old parlour game known by the same name (and also as Consequences) in which players wrote in turn on a sheet of paper, folded it to conceal part of the writing, and then passed it to the next player for a further contribution." contribution quote by wikkipedia

I sat and began to write automatically words and phrases as they popped into my head. Short phrases of one to three words, or single words as they appeared randomly in my thoughts. I typed them out till I had thirty six lines. Then I asked a friend to choose a number between one and six. She chose the number three. I began counting the lines and deleted every third line. Once at the bottom again…I counted back up the column of words and phrases deleting every third on the way back to the top of the list. Once there I chose the top line as the title of the poem… the proceeding lines are the body of it.

Behold a random word conglomeration, from the inner realms of my consciousness. A fun little word game too. Give it a try sometime! I would love to see some other examples of this type of poem…from other perspectives.

Thanks Morgan3
