Balder's Dead
by Joshua Perz
Age Group: Adult
Odin leads the grim procession
of the funeral of his son.
In the boat he places Balder
at the setting of the sun.
He was struck down in his triumph
pierced by mistletoe through his heart.
The unseen foe Hod's hand guided
that blindly threw the fatal dart.
Odin whispers in the twilight
in the ear of Balder dead
the answer to the greatest riddle.
Then, taking Balder's head
He weeps silent for his fallen child
even knowing of his return.
Never again will Odin see him
though his heart will always yearn.
The boat is sent out on its journey-
from the shore are torches thrown.
The boat bursts forth in light and glory-
now rests the seed so dearly sown.
