Indiana

by Hoosier Hedgewitch

Age Group: Adult

If you are traveling in the north, the countryside you see,
now flat but slightly hilly caused by glaciers from the sea.
Blue skies above, white puffy clouds, popcorn, mounds of hay,
green grass, big trees, and bumblebees doing what they may.

Farmland rich and dark is swirled from tractors in the spring,
Prepares this land for planting, and autumn harvest it will bring.
When driving past the fields of green, remember soil swirled,
the great state of Indiana, helps to feed half of the world.

Travel south and you will find the hilly countryside,
where forests green and rolling hills give Hoosiers swelling pride.
It’s not all flat, I told you so, but you were quick to judge,
to know my state, don’t get up late, deciding not to budge.
Really want to know the place, then get up out of bed,
Lots to do, and things to see, just like I’ve always said.

Lakes and rivers, woods and streams, they put on quite a show,
the covered bridge stands proudly where the Wabash starts to flow.
Sand dunes big as mountains, pine trees in the dell,
lighthouse, swelling waves come in, big boats go by as well.

Indiana limestone, famous buildings helped create,
contributions from my homeland come from all around the state.
Sea shells packed from long ago, holding up the walls
leave big quarries in my state, mixed with waterfalls.

Cities, towns, and winding roads, farm houses tall and proud,
in May the roar of engines, never heard a sound that loud.
The basketball going through the net, the home team gets a win,
you’ve never heard such screams as that, no matter where you’ve been.

From the mystery of a cave, to relaxing in a park,
sweet corn in the daytime, and lightning bugs at dark.
Leaves bright green, now fall ablaze, then covered all in snow,
from wildflowers to humid days, then autumn’s chill we go.

Change of seasons, change of pace, nature all abound,
folklore, peace and beauty, yes you’ll find them all around.
Same old face, stay in one place, an expert never found,
This is my state, so don’t be late, to walk her sacred ground.
