I Forgot to Tell You I Love You!

Age Group: Adult
Ruby rat white, and Ginger rat tan,
in summer, they sure loved that overhead fan.
Each smaller than a breadbox MUCH bigger than a mouse.
A four-level bookshelf made into a house.
Ginger sure loved to play on my lap,
sometimes pausing to take a rat nap.
Ruby calculated the distance to chair,
then with one big leap, she sailed through the air.
It must have really been quite a rare sight,
to see us three night-owls up all night.
Reading books and watching TV,
Two long tails, my ratties and me.
Then finally I’d go off to bed,
and just when dreams first entered my head,
Ruby decided still not time to sleep,
and down the side of the bookshelf she’d creep.
Now I mind you, this was not once or twice,
but speaking in rhyme, I think it was thrice.
Down the hallway through the bedroom door,
tail in the air, Ruby rat tore.
Up the spread and across the bed,
I felt something furry on top of my head.
Now at first this was really quite a surprise,
and not really wanting to open my eyes.
Nothing to say and nothing to speak,
Ruby rat gave me a kiss on the cheek.
One more thing before night is through,
forgot to tell human, I love you!
Author's Notes: Both Ginger and Ruby have passed over the Rainbow Bridge. Many more poems could be written concerning that subject.
