Ode To Dead Trees on Hwy 395

i miss the golden girls in the days when they
were ripe for the picking, their
blossoming breasts still pointed against the shrill
thin cloth of their dresses,
flowers bouncing in their curls,
their twentysomething youth still stretching through the dawn.
now they line the avenues like bracken, spreading their fingers
as spiders do their legs on dewy webs.
the streets are strewn with their limbs,
the air is sticky with the stench of rot.
age has made them sickly, eaten them through
to termite holes filled with white larvae.
