Sleepover

I inhale her dreams,
gardenia-scented,
drifting from between her parted lips
Snuggled in her comforter
I drift in white rose petals
and shiver
Some spaces can't be bridged with words
and I am paralyzed with doubt
Do I dare disturb the universe,
shatter our fragile balance
again?
As if furtive trespassing were not enough,
now to leave off listening at doors
and reach gingerly for the golden key
terrifies me.
She sleeps like an angel,
flushed and calm,
langorous warmth suffusing her cheeks.
I taste her dreams and tremble,
afraid to see myself,
afraid not to.
