If Only
If only you knew, what it’s like to be me!
If only you knew, the troubles I see!
Not that I wish it, upon anyone, you see...
No one deserves this damned inner ear disease!
Each day goes by, I see...looks of frustration, anger, disbelief.
Laughing, boasting and jeering, “You just have selective hearing!”
Snickering behind my back, All that sneering talk and yackity-yack!
All of these are part of the baggage that comes with this package.
This time, you listen up! Listen to me! You people just don’t see,
The way I feel, the real me. The way people talk to and about me!
One day I’m deaf, the next I can hear. That constant ringing in my ear.
That moan, a hihg-low nonstop dial tone; yet, I can’t hang up the phone.
It is driving me mad! I can’t turn it off! Please, just make it stop!
If I were deaf, I would be glad! Because then, maby I won’t go mad!
Some day, one day it will stop ringing, that damned dizzy dinging.
Forever then entwined, in silence mine, with no sound left behind.
Things you take for granted, I savor every moment emanated.
If only to hear the sweet melody, of life’s wonderous symphony.
Applausing clatter of wind and leaves dancing in the grandest trees.
The song of the dolphin’s cry with the crashing and dashing tide.
All of these, soon to be, my vague yet fondest memories.
Still some songs, on this vary day, are so often my dismay.
For Menieres Disease has taken, the softer music spoken.
Already, she has seized, my ability to hear sweet melodies.
