The Lake Once Loved

by Ann Marcotte

Age Group: Adult

The Lake Once Loved

There once was a beautiful lake which ran from a babbling brook
It was very lovely to look upon during the day
but especially so at night,
the moon danced over the tops of the gentle waves
the reflection seemed silver
her waters were untouched and unfound
as this lake was settled deep within a mountain forest undiscovered

One day, a hunter was moving through the woods
when he caught a flicker of the sunlight reflecting off of the lake
He approached the lake and drank from her as he was very thirsty
It was hot that day, so he unclothed himself and sank his body deep within her
As he swam, he could feel the sensation of her touching his skin softly
She enveloped him completely and he arose from her waters refreshed and renewed in spirit
He promised the lake that he would never tell anyone of her existence. That she would be his secret.
They would share each other exclusively
He would never speak of her because he loved her and wanted her for himself
For this she was greatful and she placed the utmost trust in the hunter.

He came to visit her often in the evening, when her waters were most beautiful.
He would rest inside her for hours, sometimes until the morning light.
He could barely stand to leave her and eagerly returned to her as soon as he could.
He could not believe she was his and no one elses
He felt he was truly blessed and did not know what he did to deserve her.

As time went by, he began to take his lovely lake for advantage
And although he did spend just as much time with her
Something had changed -- the newness of her finding had vanished
He mentioned her to an old friend of his and told him of her beauty at night
He brought his friend to her; they both entered her and she enveloped them with her body; because she trusted the fair hunter
she knew he would never let anyone hurt her.

One evening, the hunter's friend brought several people to the lake
she had no choice but to let them enter her and partake of her waters
The next morning, the hunter went to the lake and was shocked at what he found
He immediately felt deep regret in sharing her
for her waters were now tainted with disrepect and neglect
He could not enter her any longer as she was polluted by abuse
She cried as she had been betrayed; she was dirty, tainted, and useless
Most of all she was sad that she had ever trusted the hunter
for she would never be special again.

The hunter was sorry for taking something that was his secret
and exposing her to so many
Now what was beautiful and sacred has turned murky and putrid
It is no longer a place of beauty and cleansing, it is no longer their secret
Because the hunter chose to share her with others
She will never be the same, beautiful, shimmering, pure water she once was
The hunter accepted his punishment -- he knew he could never have her again --
That he had ruined the only thing he had ever truly loved.
He remained there trying to make her whole again, but failed
Both of them cried, he with regret, her with sorrow
They both became old -- no water remained inside her
He laid himself beside the mud that she had become
and said goodbye to his beloved and knew he had killed her with his carelessness or she could have lived forever
The moral of their story --
Be careful sharing special things - a part of it could be taken away and never recovered.
