Maiden, Mother, and Crone

Face drawn taught with emotion flicks around eyes swollen and red
A single tear slips over an eyelid
Words left unheard
Silenced by echoes of recalled pain
“How and why?”
A distant, walking figure shrugs nonchalantly
No answer comes
A howl-like wail rents the sky
Birds take flight in surprise and fear
A shadowed figure with a round belly sighs
Silhouetted in a back doorway
Hands swollen with babe clutch an aged paper
Eyes shining with tearful happiness
“Thank you, ” a consent left to hang alone, unwelcome
But it is enough
Hands gnarled by age
Grip the stem of a bloodied love-rose
Chapped and thinning lips part to bestow a blessing
A whisper of, “I won’t forget”
Words left unspoken carried by the snow laden winds
“I love you, mïn Leiphkin”
Muffled behind stone walls a baby cries
And at once she, its mother, is all three forms
The untouched, unskilled Maiden
The round-bellied Mother
The age-wrinkled Crone
Called by wisdom, torn by love
Ever dutiful to Her tasks
