The Mermaid's Lament

by Moon Dragon
 Age Group: Adult

A beautiful mermaid whose name was Tralee, Lived under the water of the deep blue sea, She swam through the water, searching for ships, Floating on the waves, the bow lurches and dips.
She looked up to the deck, to the sailors on board, She didn't mind pirates, with muskets or swords, To get their attention, she'd leap, and she'd jump, And show them her tail, all shiny and plump.
She would sing them a song of the sailors' demise, And smile as she saw the clouds fill their eyes, Love filled their hearts for this beautiful creature, But breaking their hearts was her special feature.
They'd climb over the railing and dive into the sea, Hoping to claim her, to hold her, her lover to be, But she would just laugh, and watch as they'd drown, As they sank in the ocean, laughter turned to a frown.
Some say her heart was as cold as ice, That she had been human who had paid the price, She had fallen in love, her heart broken in two, By a sailor who's heart loved another he knew.
He left her waiting alone at the port, Believing he'd died as it said in the report, He was in love with another when she found him alive, Her grief was so great, in the sea she did dive.
And down to the depths, with her sadness she sank, Her tears mixed with the salt water she drank, As she grew cold in the water, she did not die, She turned into a mermaid that could not cry.
So if ever you travel the sea by ship, or by boat, Beware of what lies beneath the waves as you float, For the mermaid is waiting for sailors like you, Who leave on the sea, and to love are untrue.
