War of Faith

by Moon Dragon
 Age Group: Adult

The wind was cold and howling, The day he left her side, Alone on the dock she stood crying, With grief she was unable to hide.
The war across the sea had called, All the men in the town to arms, They grabbed their swords and armor, And left shops, and inns, and farms.
They kissed their womenfolk good-bye, Their sisters, their mothers, their wives, They sailed to the land across the sea, To defend their home with their lives.
Wind whipped the tears from her face, Streaking it with cold and salt, She knew she'd never see him again, And all of it was the King's fault.
For the King had failed to defend the land, And keep the people safe and sound, It was a war of ideas, a war of faith, The blood would soak the ground.
All because they did not share, The beliefs of these new people, Devil worshippers and heretics, Driven through with a church steeple.
What makes a man a faithful man? What makes a god divine? What makes the world turn and flow? Where does one draw the line?
She stood there strong in her beliefs, As her heart cried for her man, Who went to fight the good man's fight, So they may worship as they can.
It was a war of life and freedom, It was a war for peace of mind, It was a war that needs not be, If everyone could think in kind,
Not to think the very same thoughts, Or believe in the exact same things, But to have respect and honor thoughts, Of that which another sings.
She stood and looked at the raging sea, As his ship disappeared in the waves, And cast her faith to the four winds, That their beliefs his deeds would save.
She called to the earth to hear their cries, She called the waves in the sea, She called to the fire that burns within, And the blowing wind to carry her plea.
To soften the hearts of those they fight, To open their eyes and ears to all, To teach them the ways of understanding, To show that no one has to fall.
Her husband gives his life to the god, He fights with his sword and might, She puts her life in the hands of the goddess, She fights with energy and light.
Together they fight in their own way, To defend their home, their way of life, She uses her faith to defend her husband, He uses his sword to defend his wife.
Fear of the unknown means death to us all, The voices of reason have been hushed, And in the end, no one can win, When the ideas of others are crushed.
