The Lesson of the Dragonfly

Age Group: Adult
Sitting in my garden green,
The flowers blooming brightly,
A gentle breeze, both warm and clean,
Blew on my cheeks so lightly.
And as I sat in the morning sun,
I heard a buzzing sound,
Was it a ladybug having fun?
Or a bee who was honey bound.
But it was neither that I saw that day,
As I looked both low and high,
For there on a rose, not far away,
Was a quivering dragonfly.
In the sun his wings did shimmer,
As he rested on the flower,
In his little eyes a glimmer,
Showing through his inner power.
His body an iridescent blue,
Was beautiful to my eyes,
I watched him sip a drop of dew,
And began to slowly rise.
It was as if he saw me there,
For he flitted to my hand,
All I could do was sit and stare,
His wings he gently fanned.
His little feet upon my skin,
A delightful tickle made me smile,
His little tongue so long and thin,
Such grace, and beauty, and style.
And then he looked me in the eye,
As if my thoughts he read,
I then let out a little sigh,
And listened to what he said.
He did not speak in words to me,
But in feelings of the heart,
He filled my mind with things to see,
A new beginning, a simple start.
To see life as a summer garden,
With flowers and sunshine bright,
Making sure our hearts don’t harden,
To let in the joy of flight.
And with this he flew away,
Leaving behind his message true,
Among the flowers we should play,
And chase away all that is blue!
