Musings on Life, Love, and Death

by Kedeshim

Age Group: Adult

When my grandparents crossed, my mother was struck by my Craft family showing up to the services for both. She was very touched. And, when I stepped away from the tear filled room in one of the wakes, she followed me around the corner (to make sure I was ok) . My Craft family was around me, and we were raising a toast to my ancestors. In a whisper, she asked me what my Path taught of death and dying. I vaguely remember telling her that death is but a pause in the tides of Life, and that - while physical loss is painful - we celebrate our beloved and look forward to welcoming them back again some day when paths cross in this immortal Life that we all share. I also vaguely remember saying that we do not differentiate between family of blood or of Craft, and that - for my coven and extended kin - they considered both of my grandparents to be their own flesh and blood and spirit. And that was why they came - not for me, but to honor them and their legacy living in me, my sister, my mother, my aunts and uncles, and so on.

I say vaguely, because I admit that my voice fluctuated and tears came to my eyes. I remember my mom and I hugging tightly. She said that that was beautiful.

And THAT is why I keep these traditions alive. That is why I honor those who have gone before me, at Hallowmas especially but every day. And that is why I hope that, when I have left this body, there will be those who remember me in similar ways - with a lit candle and a cup of steaming chai. And I will look back across the veil, and smile, and journey ever forwards. And we are all one, the living and the dead, in this great Wheel of Stars and Magic and Life and Love.

That, my dears, IS the core of why a Witch's power is rooted in the Underworld. And that too is why we honor the Dead and pray for them, even as they pray for us and honor us. The two sides of the Veil constantly flow into the other. Such is the Law. Such is the Way. Such is the meaning of Family.

Author's Notes: Hallowmas - an antiquated alternative to All Hallows' Eve - is the name my Craft tradition gives to the November Eve crossquarter.
