The Bitter And Rue

by Rhiannon Keneally

Age Group: Adult

Old songs and the cold
Keep me alive
Pennies smoothed old
From wind and salt
Pocketed in my safe hold

In this harsh space
I yearn to find myself,
To find the grace
To grasp hard
And keep moving in this place

I have choices to make,
None easily completed
In the retrograde’s wake
However, it is done
And I pray for my soul’s sake!

Nothing should ever be light
While in the power
Of Mercury’s delight
To retract and delay
The direction that’s right

What was that all about?
Tempting me,
In such circuitous route
Over long years
In deepening doubt

Long have I had
The dead and living
Trailing me in processions, sad
A Queen of Thorns and Swords
Forced to thwart both good and bad

Now more living ghosts and shades
Prick my conscience
Will I ever break from Hades?
How can I live,
Until this old shadow fades?

This one will not depart,
Remaining most persistent
He was a thin prospect from the start
Like the many others, though,
He fails to pierce my iron heart

I should never try
For such warm hopes
An Iron Queen should never cry
Nor will I start
But this one needs a goodbye

His eyes, his face
Have not always held my fascination
I am still unsure of its embrace
Seen in dreams
Surpassing time and space

But he is not mine
He exists only in between thoughts
In the space between the living and divine
Where everything and nothing
Grow and refine

Sometimes, though, it’s empty
Not everything that comes from
Such infinity comes to be
He remains abstract
And hollow to me

Never believe all dreams true
For they are only illusions you give power
Trusting in them will only hew
Glass and iron in the grooves
Split open by the bitter and rue

Goodbye J.L.
Funny, those initials belong
To two in my life to quell
Two distinctive lives in one woman
Seventeen Stars in the well
Goodbye J.L.

Author's Notes: Mercury Retrograde, obviously. Also Seventeen Stars is from Tarot. The Star, or pure hope in the darkest time, is 17 of the Major Arcana.
