I swear I was born right in the doorway

by Arianna Pendragon
 Age Group: Adult

I can feel myself laughing all over the place &I love the pressure on my stomach As you lead (carry) me Down that hallway Into that dumb Elevator that Scared me So badly That I Ran.
I'm waiting for that day You'll smile at me Hand in hand in pocket Look me in the eye Maybe stop laughing for a second Disregard my height And tell me that you can't Won't ever forever Live without me. And that secretly you Remembered what day it was And you have And always will Love me like you Try and say You do.
But until then I'm settling for Your hand on my shoulder Fingers on my waist Eyes wandering to places I can't see And secret smiles to your friends That say things closer to "Isn't she cute?" Or maybe sometimes "Aren't we stupid?" Instead of things Pertaining to your undying Affection.
The sky's blue up ahead The things I notice When we walk up the street Like the dog getting walked by its owner Who's dressed in all grey And the puddles with leaves Floating, sinking, Moving as we step And maybe the men Talking to eachother about Roofs and yards And the weather that I heard her say something To that friend about Earlier today And the grip of your hand And how it tightened When you slipped on the curb And splashed Into a gutter puddle And practically Took me with you.
But I can tell now That you like talking to him more And our jokes just Aren't as funny As the time you had to Change your friend's Dad's tire in the snow That one time, Or the way your Tallest friend just Had to share a Tiny tent way Up in those Mountains.
And this strange arrangement Of lines and figures seems to Be so lost on you And my math scores will never Seem so inadequate To someone barely passing A level or three below And the way the rain drips Down onto my lenses A second after I finish cleaning Making them so perfect Spot-free Is funny and laughable Instead of ironic And meaningful So I'm hoping sometime One of these cold rainy Days we have You'll see that I clean my Glasses just to have them fog up For no reason other Than that I want to be able To see you when You smile.
And to me That And the million things you do With your friends after Swim practice Are the funny parts Of my existence Not the way we Push eachother around The sidewalks or When you make fun of me Or the weird Made-up words my Friends and I Say to eachother When we look over at you And see you drawing Or talking to other people About things I can't decipher And never could On your lips During fourth period
