Awakening

Age Group: Adult
To lie beneath the chilly blanket white,
To wait for warmth to cause the need to stir.
To push the heavy weight aside and then,
To taste at last the air, the earth's delight.
But cold may not depart as soon it should.
Great icy blasts the tender shoots beseige.
And 'round the sun dark angry clouds send veils
To bind warm rays from traveling through the wood.
What say ye sprouted stuff to this attack?
Will winter's might reign firm and leave all dead?
How can you fight such force, resist the gale?
What offering have you now with all you lack?
The silent newborns burn, as if by fire,
Beneath raw winds, the frigid breath of god.
Yet as the force subsides, some do emerge
Into that kinder air, filled with desire
To push and strain against the lesser weight,
To leave dark Mother Earth for higher planes,
To reach with every fiber, every cell
Towards that which lends all order to their fate.
Smile sweetly while you may, survivors green.
For all your struggle sells itself to Time
Which cares not how you've mastered soil and air,
But only that your journeys' end be seen.
