America

by Akasha
 Age Group: Adult

My America is far away Washed up on some sandy island We could tape it up, reload the guns Before the soldiers disband And I always fought For an optimistic view But now the green is drowning And there’s nothing I can do
And on this silent island There’s no one there to mind That she has harbored ignorance and become a bit unkind But here on this island It can get a little lonely And I can hear her sighing, “If only, if only.”
Helplessness, intolerance Are closest at their core And she blamed them for all of it Fighting her “righteous” war My America is filled with Catholics, left-wing democrats Teenagers who just don’t care And empty bureaucrats And I wonder how We could ever get along And I know now that’s how America lost her song
Maybe it’s my fault that my America has become torn Maybe since I’m choosing sides I’m only adding one more thorn But when people try to help her Since they think the way they do They send out the Navy The marines, a thousand troops
And do you think what we lost We could ever regain? And it’s not only hegemony Though that’ll never be the same Cause on the sandy Island Somewhere off California’s coast They’re still singing “God Bless America” But they’re just singing to a ghost.
She sends a ripple through the water And the waves slam against some other shore Her words are like graffiti And I understand it even more Because when they told me That I could do anything They never said I could do something That actually had meaning
My America You were never really mine—were you? It doesn’t really matter, but it was a tricky thing to do With all these people saying that I could do anything I’ve always known My America is alone.
