Why?

My dreams are the key
of what I truly seek.
A life of love and happiness,
marriage and the man I love.
But dreams can lead to madness
and madness to exile.
My heart, so full and happy,
has been set adrift again.
Once more alone in my madness.
Ghosts from pasts other than
my own come to me now
whispering and confiding.
Achingly, I see the truth
and know that my love is one-sided.
Why do the doors of my heart open so easily?
What knowledge is there in pain? With my love
do I set them free to find what they yearn for?
Why can't it once be with me?
