The Destruction of Something Sacred

Hail silver moon, your beauty shining bright,
I thank you for your silver glow, which guides me on this night,
Back to that sacred grove, where my ancestors used to go,
Regretfully I haven’t visited in a year or so,
You can imagine my surprise when I see,
It’s all been cut, every last tree
That Holy Temple where we chanted hand in hand,
And danced to the music of the reed pipes of Pan,
Has been destroyed in the name of progress and greed,
Who could have done such a terrible deed,
And who could have thought something so pure and grand,
Could be bought and sold by the common man,
Who never gazed at the trees so tall,
Or smelled the flowers so fragrant and small,
I’m asking you all to hear my plea,
And stop the clear cutting of Mother Earth’s trees,
I know we need the wood but we can do it right,
And manage our forests with educated insight,
When we learn to appreciate our fellow tree,
Then we all can live in harmony.
Author's Notes: I myself have never had a sacred place destroyed but I have seen some beautiful places obliterated by clear cutting. When I first started college I was aiming for a degree in Wildlife Ecology and Management and even though I have changed majors I still believe the message of responsible forest management is one that needs to be heard.
