Remembrance

I heard "our" song on the radio today
a haunting melody....
it brought me back to passion's fool
and rode me hard.
And yet, once the last strain was heard,
I recalled your declaration of hate
at the end of our life together
and at that moment, born of pain, I knew
that I would not see you again...
Not due to false pride or vengeful wrath
but a karmic destiny unfolding - for the both of us.
I heard your pleading call on my voicemail today
your rich baritone.....
once so vibrant and full that it had the power
to pluck at the strings of my soul,
took me down a trail of thought and emotion
that I remember all too well
and want to tread no more.
I heard my voice within my heart today
strong and loud....
it shouted out what I had known for a while
but never had the courage to admit....
until now.......
I remembered that all the pain and suffering
we caused each other had changed me
and opened me to stand beside another,
So, no - I will not return your call
as heartrending as it may be
Your path has taken you elsewhere
while mine has set me free.
