Broken Promises

I've heard it all before
and I'm tired of it all...
I honored my vow to be yours
and you were the first to break yours.
I forgave you five times and
you acted as if it were nothing...
a given.
I vowed it would be different
and it was..yet....
you pushed when you could
have understood my fear
and those who drove me to act out
and I broke my vow to you...
And the moment I did,
no forgiveness was found
until you strayed into worlds
you never wanted to return to....
I reached out and you took
my hand to rip my heart out again.
How much can the heart withstand?
I found out too readily
when again I forgave you
as you vowed yourself to another
and still once more, returned to me.
Am I Love's fool or Love's doormat?
All those lies told to make me look
like you were the wounded;
when we both were.
I made a vow that I knew
would not be accepted -
you were not free still to make a final vow
and now, when I must retreat
in order to save myself, I am branded a liar.
Who lies to whom?
You lie to yourself when you vow to honor me
yet spout nonsensical whims of mine to others;
you dishonor what you would give to me
what you give to others;
you brand yourself when you brand me a liar.
We both have broken promises
to each other.
I can accept it...yet you can't -
your constant barrage of past "inconsistencies"
has shown your own instability to accept
and live a vow given.
Yet I love you and can accept that it will never change...
but that doesn't mean that I have to accept
your broken promises.
