January,
the sky doesn’t hold any promise
like it did in December
i keep seeing myself in the ice,
but i can’t quite remember
January is a silver ring,
cold against my skin
and it’s frozen and it’s pressing
and it’s trying to break in.
amazing grace was way back in August,
hallelujah in September
and i keep hearing those echoes
but i can’t quite remember.
January is that fear i keep having
that nightmare reoccurring
the clouds are skating and falling,
but i’m just watching them and learning.
and i’ll push my way through windy downtown
huddled on the corner next to my best friend
but she must be so much more than that
holding my hand as we descend
into the streets—is snow supposed to be black?
dodging the sliding cars
January hasn’t beaten us yet
we fight back with our colored scarves.
January is that nightmare i keep having
that fear reoccurring
and i see my reflection falling
but i’m just watching me and learning.
i’ll never have a home ever again
i realize there it’s just as cold
my home is the trouble we’re gonna be in
punching right through what we’re told.
words now only come out icy
just like everything else i do
and i have a thousand questions
i should have asked them back in June
January might pack up tomorrow
but inside of me she always stays
and sometimes i feel so frozen
the sun couldn’t melt me away
i only want to melt away.
