A Prayer (Variation on Dryden)

by B. T. Newberg
 Age Group: Adult

What fire of ancient wisdom can we claim, If public doctrines douse the private flame? But, wandering Queen, how brave dost Thou provide For wandering hearts a confident guide! Thy path is hidden in the grove of life, A maze of brambles making joy 'mid strife; O teach me to perceive what's thus concealed, And walk the path that's inwardly revealed; And her alone for my instructor take Whom Thou hast taught me never to forsake! My thoughtless youth matured through vain desires, Adulthood, long pursuing wandering fires, At last grew wise; and when their glimpse was gone, My soul perceived she sparkled on her own. Such was I, and such by nature still I am, Be Thine the fire and be mine the same.
Author's Notes: As a Naturalistic Pagan, I believe in evidence. There is no evidence that deities and magic are "real" in the most literal sense, but they may yet be moving and powerful. These poems are a tribute to the inspiration of Pagan ways.

Original poem:
A Prayer, by John Dryden (1631-1700)
What weight of anicent witness can prevail, If private reason hold the public scale? But, gracious God, how well dost Thou provide For erring judgments an unerring guide! Thy throne is darkness in th'abyss of light, A blaze of glory that forbids the sight; O teach me to believe Thee thus concealed, And search no farther than Thyself revealed; But her alone for my director take Whom Thou hast promis'd never to forsake! My thoughtless youth was winged with vain desires, My manhood, long misled by wandering fires, Followed false lights; and when their glimpse was gone, My pride struck out new sparkles of her own. Such was I, such by nature still I am, Be Thine the glory and be mine the shame.
