Dearly Departed, O Vapor of Earth (Var. on Pope)

by B. T. Newberg
 Age Group: Adult

Dearly departed, O vapor of earth, Though briefly sprayed, arise now for thy rebirth; And though thy mist shall roll beyond the veil, O'er summery lands or listless oceans pale, Somewhere to form as yonder morning's dew, Yet hither shall thy form be glimmering too: For shall thy grave with rising flowers be dressed, And the green turf sprout lightly from thy breast; There the first roses of the year shall blow, And there the morning her silvery tears bestow; While spirits with their misty feet shall dance O'er ground made greener with thy radiance. And there we too, thy dew-eyed mourners here, May yet discover thy shimmering atmosphere.
Author's Notes: This prayer is appropriate for memorials, funerals, or visiting the grave of a departed loved one or friend.
This is another "variation" on a classic poet's work. In this case, I started with a passage from Pope, then edited, expanded, and transformed.
Here is the original passage:
from Elegy to the Memory of an Unfortunate Lady, lines 63-68 by Alexander Pope (1688-1744)
... Yet shall thy grave with rising flowers be dress'd, And the green turf lie lightly on thy breast: There shall the morn her earliest tears bestow, There the first roses of the year shall blow; While angels with their silver wings o'ershade The ground now sacred by thy relics made.

As a Naturalistic Pagan, I believe in evidence. There is no evidence that deities and magic are "real" in the most literal sense, but they may yet be moving and powerful. These poems are a tribute to the inspiration of Pagan ways.
