Dull the Pain

by Kaleesto

Age Group: Adult

In a world full of hopelessness
Rampant with pain and disgust…
We try so hard to keep that which “should remain the same”
We fight the insight of a new age
Saying that what has always been done is better-
Yet, never learning that we can grow from our mistakes
We clash with our thoughts
Hating those who dare think differently
We take up arms for trivial things
Letting our children learn by our poor example
We control others’ lives
Yet don’t know how to live our own
We take drugs to escape this place
And wonder why there is so much indifference
We watch too much television
So that we can feel better about ourselves
Unfortunately the effects don’t last long
We eat and drink too much
But condemn those who look the part
We incessantly spend too much
Thinking the material world holds some illusive part of ourselves
Not realizing that it just buries it deeper
We take aspirin and the like to release the pains our body has taken on
As it desperately tries to get our attention
We dull our pains in so many ways
But do we ever stop to question why?
Is our life so desolate that we no longer care?
Is our own life so meaningless
That we cannot enjoy that which is right in front of us?
Are we so narrow minded that we must force our “opinions” on others?
Have we ever stopped to ask ourselves - our “opinions” even our own?
Why have we not evolved past this?
Collectively we flock
Thinking that which others have learned is better
Rather than forging ahead alone to discover our own truths
We dull the pain of living this life so that we can go on living each day
Now I ask you…
Is that what you really call being alive?

Author's Notes: This poem came to me in the form of a dream... Upon waking up, I realized my back hurt... the first thought I had was, "Where's my ibuprofen?" The second was "Why do you need it?" I lie in bed contemplating that for a moment, and realized that we all do that. With almost everything we do. And I felt the need to express it.

Blessed Be!
