Summer on Mille Lacs Lake

Morning bird chorus
Sweet, cool breeze
Fuzz floats in the air
Tickles my nose
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sun so high
Beams down at me
Sticky fingers
Watermelon seeds
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Playing in the water
Dive under, murky green
See fish flashing by like slivers of colored glass
Plants dance to unheard water song
~~~~~~~~~~~
Mother duck and her children
Glide by gracefully over the smooth surface
Barely breaking a trail, which quickly disappears
Shells and rocks glint like buried treasure
~~~~~~~~~~
Great clouds of insects
Hum a tinny tune
The dusk gathers her skirts and
The air-cools
Relief from the merciless sun
~~~~~~~~~~
The sun now looks tame
As it lays bleeding colors
Into sky and water
~~~~~~~~~~
Stars come out to play
Their twins reflected in
Nature's mirror
The moon a glowing cold orb
~~~~~~~~~~~
Grows dark, so dark
I can't cut through it
The night has its magic world
~~~~~~~~~~~
The owls' staccato voice
Wings sweeping the trees
Loons' lonely call
Quivers over the night
As I fall asleep
Author's Notes: My folks have a place on Mille Lacs Lake on the west end by a litle town called Wakon.
Every year when school let out, weekends were spent up at "the cabin." I didn't fully appreciate the magick this place has and has had for me until I was an adult.
