The Milk of the Mother

by B. T. Newberg
 Age Group: Adult

The Great Mother says: "If any child of the earth desires suckle, for that child my bosom leaks. May sweet milk flow from my right and bitter from my left. Here in the darkness, I am with my children."
All seek a turn at the right teat, but those who suckle too long there are placed at the left.
The first time a child is torn from the teat it screams. The second time it gnashes. The third it wipes. And the fourth it learns.
Everyone takes a turn at the bitter teat, but woe to them who resign themselves to it.
There are those who are poor in vision and those who are poor in taste. The poor in vision stumble upon the left teat, and upon tasting its milk, they spit it out and seek the right. But the dull in taste suckle long at the left teat, poisoning their innards, for no other reason than their own indifference. Woe to the dull in taste.
No child may suckle the right teat without tasting the left, for separately even the right is poison. Only in balance and proportion is there nourishment.
When the bosom runs dry, the children weep for themselves. But the Mother weeps for her children.
And then there are times when the Mother grieves for her missing lover, and the rancor of her loneliness sours both the right and the left. Then all her children grieve with her, and they wail a terrible dirge.
The hungry child cries, and the full sleeps.
Author's Notes: As a Naturalistic Pagan, I believe in evidence. There is no evidence that deities and magic are "real" in the most literal sense, but they may yet be moving and powerful. These poems are a tribute to the inspiration of Pagan ways.
