Universal Intelligence

by B. T. Newberg

Age Group: Adult

Universal Intelligence

Everything has universal intelligence?a rock knows how to hold together, and when a wind blows upon it, it knows how to wear away slowly. A corpse knows how to let itself go, to give up its consistency so that other things may be nourished and formed from it. Water knows how to evaporate, rise, and then fall as rain. And it knows how to find its way back to the ocean. This is an innate kind of intelligence. It inheres in everything, as a very property or condition of existence. That which exists, exists with intelligence. All things effortlessly find their place, because they are able to communicate with their surroundings according to this intelligence. The rock communicates with the wind, and wears away. The corpse communicates with the earth, and enriches the soil. Water communicates with heat, and rises toward its destiny. Everything exists according to this universal intelligence.

And this intelligence is organized and consistent. It is ordered, and proceeds according to what we call the laws of nature. All things speak the same language. There is not one law for rocks and another for corpses and yet another for water. All things communicate according to a complex but consistent universal intelligence.

We people are intelligent as everything, and when we die we do not lose our intelligence. We lose our personality, but not our intelligence. Our corpses know just how to carry on, according to our new place in the universe. We become nourishment for worms, soil and hence plants, our breath goes out into the air and part of it becomes rain? in all these ways we are reborn in perfect accord with our universe.

All is in perfect communication, and this communion can be called the Goddess. When we are born, many various entities come together to compose us, and this happens by natural universal intelligence, by the Goddess. As we live, we are moved by the same natural intelligence, of which our personal intelligence is a phenomenon. When we die, our personal intelligence dissipates but our universal intelligence carries on according to the way of the Goddess. Thus, the person dies but we do not die. That part of us which is universally intelligent is immortal. The universal cannot die, any more than the personal can avoid dying. Universal intelligence is our ability to know exactly how to change and when, according to the way of the Goddess.

Justice

All return to the earth equally at death. The good receive their reward in rejoining the great process of nature, freed of ego. The bad also receive their just deserts, for they are annihilated. They are destroyed in ego, eliminating their ill influence, while being physically recycled into nature for the nutriment of all. Both the good and the bad receive their just rewards, which are not different, but are the best for all. Those who wish a worse punishment for the bad or a better reward for the good do not understand their place in the greater ecosystem; they are thinking individually, not for the good of all.

There is only one stream of karma: that of the entire ecosystem. There is no individual karma, all is inextricably bound together.

Salvation

We are all ?saved? as if by grace, from the moment we are created. Every one of us has universal intelligence, immortality through intelligent matter. Not one of us, nor a single one of our atoms, will be destroyed at death. All will go on eternally. Thus we are always already ?saved.?

Yet it remains for us to fulfill this salvation, to give it practical meaning for us, by taking one of two roads: the road of struggle or the road of peace. The road of struggle is full of resentment and hostility toward the universe. It makes a hell of our natural salvation. The road of peace is acceptance and appreciation for the universal order and our part in it. Wise practice brings one to the road of peace.

We are all destined to death, no matter which road we take, how well we live, whether we please or offend the gods, etc. The road of peace reconciles one to this.

Salvation arises as reincarnation, but not as a single event. Rather, it is multiple ongoing reincarnation. We reincarnate not in one form but in many, and not only in death but throughout life as well. Our atoms are constantly shedding, our breath flowing in and out, and each of these goes on to become incorporated naturally into a new complex, a new incarnation. We are also constantly taking on atoms, through ingestion, respiration, and absorption through skin. These are incorporated into us and indeed change us, so that moment to moment we are involved in reincarnations involving subtle but continuous changes.

And so, eating is a primary sacrament and mystery. Through it we experience our own death and rebirth, our own participation in the fundamental action of change in the universe.

Visions

Visions may play a role in revealing these mysteries, and it is good to keep them secret. Secrecy strengthens the aura of the vision and its personal sanctity. At the same time, it frees interpersonal discourse to pursue community-relevant issues, not obscuring them with personal egoistic agendas (motivated by one?s personal visions) .

The role of vision is to pass beyond superficial, intellectual integration and reach deep integration through images and symbols. This is a personal process, which the community can support but not do for you, and which you cannot do for the community. Thus there is no need to reveal your vision content. But giving thanks for visions and showing forth and manifesting the fruits of visions are rightly communal activities.

Author's Notes: c 2007

As a Naturalistic Pagan, I believe in evidence. There is no evidence that deities and magic are "real" in the most literal sense, but they may yet be moving and powerful. These poems are a tribute to the inspiration of Pagan ways.
