Truth is Legion

by B. T. Newberg
 Age Group: Adult

A healer was wandering in search of truth. He came to a small sea and said, “I shall cross over to the other side.” When he reached the other side he found a place of graves. Among the graves he found a man, one of his own people, naked and growling, who hurt himself with stones.
The healer perceived with his vision that this man had been a philosopher in search of truth, but the spirit of truth had come into him prematurely and driven him mad.
So the healer said to the spirit of truth, “What is your name?” And the spirit replied, “We are Legion.”
Now the healer’s people believed there was but one God, who was above in heaven. But at this moment the healer was initiated into the truth, and thus he gained power to command it.
So the healer said to the spirit, “Come out of this man.” But the spirit pleaded, “Do not destroy us nor leave us without body. Lo, there is a herd of swine grazing on the hill. Let us go into the swine.”
The healer agreed and the spirit of truth went into the herd. It is for this reason that pigs wallow in the mud, for they know that truth is not only in heaven but also in the mud, and in many places.
Now the healer returned to his people on the other side of the sea and spread a new teaching. For he now knew that truth was not only in heaven but also in himself.

As a Naturalistic Pagan, I believe in evidence. There is no evidence that deities and magic are "real" in the most literal sense, but they may yet be moving and powerful. These poems are a tribute to the inspiration of Pagan ways.
