To the Veiled Isis

by B. T. Newberg
 Age Group: Adult

To the Veiled Isis*
O Great Goddess, You who have been with me, You who have not abandoned me, I have known you as Isis. Now I know you as Aset. Yet still I know you not. What is it you desire of me? Is it worship and devotion that you desire?
You came to me in a Greek chiton and veil, Glowing from within, surrounded by darkness, Shining through your diaphanous robe Like a star in the night sky. Your veil, lifted by the wind, Revealed more darkness beneath.
So it was when I met you. I felt you, but I knew you not. And I could not stand before you. I knew respect instinctively, And I fell on my knees, For it was a cold, dark, and terrible abode where I met you, And yours was an awesome figure. What could I do but fall on my knees? But you bade me rise, And I became ever after your devotee.
Even at times when I could not believe in you, Still somehow I remained yours in my heart. Now after more than two years, I am still yours. Indeed I am yours more than ever. You are my first, foremost, and forever goddess.
You are my mother, my lady, my protector. But I have also lied with you. It was natural, and you did not resist, And you have not withheld your blessings. You opened yourself to me, and I entered. What it meant I know not, but it matters not. Let meaning be for you. I will content myself with experience. Here I am, my lady. Here I am, great mother, Deep lady of the veil, Dweller in darkness, Light within, Hearth within my breast, Star in my heart, Holder of my heart strings. I praise you now and forever.
To Osiris
O Great Father, Hitherto I have known you little. You have been to me as a foreign spectacle or curiosity, Or else an adjunct to my love for Isis. But now I reach out to you. I call to you and entreat you, That you enter into my life. Show me your way and your wisdom. Teach me of the masculine and the paternal. Give me respect for balance and union. I have known your wife as mother, Now let me know you as father. O Great God Wesir, Lord of the waters, Lord of the corn and barley, Lord of the mysteries of life and death, And wise sage of the circle of life, I give you praise.
*Inscription on a temple at Sais: "Never yet has any mortal lifted my veil."

As a Naturalistic Pagan, I believe in evidence. There is no evidence that deities and magic are "real" in the most literal sense, but they may yet be moving and powerful. These poems are a tribute to the inspiration of Pagan ways.
