To Dionysos, On Happiness

"Happiness"--the end of life? the god-like blessed goal?
The maenads whip and cry, they leap to thrashing drums,
And rip from out their bones a blessed, battered beat
Eviscerating care: unhappy Pentheus,
Whose limbs from him are torn, and used for drum-sticks
Hard upon the frame and tight-stretched skin!
"Happiness"--the end of life? the god-like blessed goal?
When the cold winds blow, and ice-lets prick my cheeks,
Drawing tight the skin upon the frame, and white,
Then strike me on the head, my god, and I shall sound
Not at all resounding, not deep, profound,
But, like "happiness, " a taut and quiet ponk.

As a Naturalistic Pagan, I believe in evidence. There is no evidence that deities and magic are "real" in the most literal sense, but they may yet be moving and powerful. These poems are a tribute to the inspiration of Pagan ways.
