The Pawn

Trees trembling
Fierce winds blow…
The sounds of clocks tick-tocking is what we all now know
The beat of the war drum
The call of wild
Even here now, your past is defiled
Can you step forward
Escape from your past
Why did you think your ideals would last?
A time has come
To create something new
But where do we start with our lives all askew?
They say we’re the same
Yet they prey on the chance
There are those of us out there with a different stance
To those who would do this
I call unto you
Be watchful and wary of those of us few
We will rise and reclaim
That which you take
Your lies are deceitful, shameful and fake
A new day is dawning
A day full of hope
Perhaps mankind can do more than just cope
You think you have won
That you have staked out your claim
I am here to tell you, we are not all the same
With my very last breath
I will fight for this right
To be different than you, despite all your might
So as the clock ticks
And the war rages on
I am here to tell you, “I am no one’s pawn.”
Author's Notes: This poem has been a work in progress for a long time... I could never quite seem to find the pieces that fit. Apparently, it was waiting to be discovered now. Enjoy!
